2026 State Tax Guide
🌴 The 9 States with Zero Income Tax
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming and New Hampshire (investment income only) have no state income tax on wages. However, they may have higher property taxes, sales taxes, or other fees. Washington has a 7% capital gains tax on high earners. Consider total tax burden, not just income tax, when relocating.
📈 States with Highest Income Tax Rates (2026)
California: 13.3% on income over $1M (mental health services tax)
Hawaii: 11% on income over $200,000
New York: 10.9% on income over $25M (plus NYC 3.876%)
New Jersey: 10.75% on income over $5M
Oregon: 9.9% on income over $250,000
Minnesota: 9.85% on income over $171,220
⚖️ Flat Tax States (Growing Trend)
Arizona (2.5%), Colorado (4.4%), Georgia (5.49%), Idaho (5.695%), Illinois (4.95%), Indiana (3.15%), Kentucky (4.0%), Massachusetts (5.0%), Michigan (4.25%), Mississippi (5.0%), North Carolina (4.5%), Pennsylvania (3.07%), Utah (4.65%) all use flat tax rates. This simplifies calculation but removes progressivity. Several states are moving toward flat tax or eliminating income tax entirely.
🤝 State Tax Reciprocity Agreements
Some neighboring states have agreements so you don't pay tax twice. For example, Illinois and Iowa, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Virginia and DC, Maryland and DC have reciprocity. If you live in one and work in the other, you typically only pay tax to your state of residence. Always check current agreements as they can change.
💻 Remote Work & Multi-State Taxation
Working remotely? You generally owe tax to your state of residence. However, if you work in another state temporarily, you may owe non-resident tax there. The "convenience of the employer" rule (applied by NY and others) means you could owe tax to your employer's state even if working from home elsewhere. Track days worked in each state carefully.
