Top Tax Deductions for 1099 Workers (2026)
π Home Office Deduction
Deduct $5 per square foot (up to 300 sq ft = $1,500) using the simplified method, or calculate actual expenses (rent, utilities, insurance, repairs) based on office percentage of home. Must be used exclusively and regularly for business. Cannot be used for any personal activities.
π Vehicle & Mileage Deductions
67 cents per mile for 2026 (up from 65.5Β’ in 2024). Track all business miles with apps like MileIQ, Everlance, or Stride. Alternative: Deduct actual vehicle expenses (gas, maintenance, insurance, depreciation) based on business use percentage. You cannot use both methods.
π Business Meals & Entertainment
50% deductible for business meals with clients or while traveling. Must have business purpose and keep receipts. Company-wide parties (holiday, summer) are 100% deductible. Entertainment expenses (sports, theater) are generally NOT deductible post-2018 TCJA.
π₯ Self-Employed Health Insurance
100% deductible for health, dental, and long-term care premiums for you, spouse, and dependents. This is an "above-the-line" deduction on Schedule 1 that reduces your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), potentially qualifying you for other tax benefits.
πΌ SEP-IRA & Solo 401k Contributions
Contribute up to $69,000 for 2026 (Solo 401k) or 25% of net self-employment income up to $345,000 compensation (SEP-IRA). These reduce both income tax AND self-employment tax (15.3%). Catch-up contributions of $7,500 allowed if age 50+. Deadline: Tax filing deadline including extensions.
β‘ QBI Deduction (Section 199A)
After all other deductions, take 20% of qualified business income as an additional deduction. Most 1099 freelancers qualify automatically. This is a below-the-line deduction that doesn't reduce self-employment tax but reduces overall income tax liability. Phases out for certain service businesses above income thresholds.
